Although much is still unknown about human evolution, and new discoveries periodically shift the pieces of what we thought we knew, it seems immutable that our species arose in Africa, probably around 300,000 years ago. But why in Africa and not elsewhere? Was it chance or necessity? This is not a trivial question, and science does not yet have an answer.
