Manuel de León

Research Professor CSIC

Born in Requejo (Zamora, Spain), he got his Master Degree and then the Ph D degree in the University of Santiago de Compostela. His work has been mainly devoted to the study of Differential Geometry and its applications to Mechanics and Mathematical Physics (about 300 papers and 4 monographies). He is currently member of a number of Editorial Boards and Scientific Committees, and Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Geometric Mechanics. Research Professor in the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), he was the founder of the Instituto de Ciencias Matemáticas (ICMAT), and its first Director. He was refounder and vicepresident of the Real Sociedad Matemática Española (RSME), and founder and Director of La Gaceta (1998-2004). Coordinator of the Spanish Committee for the World Mathematical Year 2000. He was the President of the Spanish Committee for Mathematics, 2004-2007, and President of the International Congress of Mathematicians ICM2006-Madrid, and member of the Executive Committee of the International Mathematical Union (2007-2014). He was also member of the Executive Board of the International Council for Science (ICSU), since 2014.
