Ellen Ruppel Shell is a professor of journalism at Boston University, where she directs the Graduate Program in Science Journalism. A veteran correspondent for The Atlantic, she has written and reported for a wide array of other publications, among them New York Times, Scientific American, Science, The Boston Globe, Newsweek, and The Washington Post. She is the author of four books published in a dozen languages, most recently The Job: Work and Its Future in a Time of Radical Change (Currency, 2018), from which this essay is excerpted.
