From James Lind’s experiment on sailors to find a cure for scurvy to the development in record time of vaccines against COVID-19, the history of clinical trials is the history of the refinement of a method that today allows drugs and therapies to be developed with the highest scientific, ethical and safety standards. However, achieving the design of the definitive procedure that is applied today in laboratories around the world has taken 275 years of tests, experiments and even tragic events, which have enabled this research technique to be optimised.
