OpenMind author Saskia Sassen has won Spain’s prestigious Prince of Asturias award for Social Sciences 2013. The Dutch sociologist is the third woman to win this prize and the only woman to appear among the top ten social scientists in the world, as ranked by the Social Science Citation Index of the last decade.
Saskia Sassen is the Robert S. Lynd Professor of Sociology at Columbia University and Co-Chair of The Committee on Global Thought at the same institution. She is also a visiting professor at the London School of Economics and Political Science.
Divided between New York and London, this remarkable researcher with an international background of several decades has intensively studied some of the most important sociological aspects of large cities: immigration, global cities and changes resulting from current transnational conditions, problems such as the impoverishment of the middle classes, the difficulties in accessing telecommunications or social inequalities and segregation.
One of her greatest scientific contributions has been the concept of “global city”, which she explains in her OpenMind article, The Global City: Introducing a Concept, included in the 2009 book The Multiple Faces of Globalization.
Saskia Sassen participated in the 2012 OpenMind event, where she explained some of the main ideas of her article. She shared with OpenMind her concerns about the city, which she considers “a space of enormous conflicts“.
