A Sophisticated Molecule Called Nanocar

Estimated reading time Time 1 to read

Nature Magazine has published a recent research paper about molecular motion that allows scientific community to now explore novel techniques of operating on the nanoscale.

The study presents a newly developed molecule with 4 functional units attached: a NANOCAR. When the molecule is placed on a copper surface and light, chemical or electrical energy is applied, it moves.

The nanocar’s axes can be fine-tuned to follow either linear or random surface paths or to remain stationary.

The discover opens a new window on Nanotechnology research. The authors believe that “This design represents a starting point to explore more sophisticated molecular mechanical systems, perhaps with complete control over the direction of movement.
